What is respite care and how do you access it?
May 13, 2026
Respite care is temporary relief for family caregivers — someone else takes over the care so you can rest, attend to your own needs, or simply breathe for a few hours or days. It is one of the most important tools available to caregivers, and one of the least used, largely because most caregivers do not know it exists or how to access it.
There are several types of respite care, and the right one depends on your situation.
In-home respite brings a trained volunteer or professional into your home to care for your loved one while you step away. This can be a few hours a week or a regular schedule. It works well for people who cannot easily be transported.
Adult day programs offer structured care in a community setting, typically weekdays during business hours. Your loved one spends the day in a supervised environment with activities, meals, and social interaction. You go to work, run errands, or simply rest. Many people with dementia actually thrive in these settings — the structure and social contact can be better for them than a quiet house.
Overnight or short-term residential respite places your loved one in a facility for several days or weeks. This is especially useful for caregiver vacations, medical procedures, or recovery from illness.
How to access it: start with the ARCH National Respite Network at archrespite.org, which maintains a locator for free and low-cost respite programs by state. The Eldercare Locator at eldercare.acl.gov connects you with local Area Agencies on Aging, which coordinate many free services.
Veterans' caregivers have additional resources through the VA Caregiver Support Program, which provides respite care and monthly stipends for eligible caregivers.
Medicaid-funded respite is available in most states — the eligibility rules vary, but many families qualify without realizing it. Call your state Medicaid office and ask specifically about respite services.
You are not supposed to do this without a break. Respite care exists because everyone who designed it knew that.
